Dear Friend,

As winter approaches, we urgently seek your support for Positive Action in Housing's Winter Refugee Crisis Appeal which aims to raise £50,000. We will be working in the lead up to Christmas to provide emergency support for almost 500 refugee families and lone individuals, and then throughout the winter period. We welcome all donations to this appeal, no matter how modest.  Read below for some of the families we will be supporting.

The levels of destitution and insecure housing amongst people from refugee communities in Scotland has greatly increased - hence this intervention.

With many services closed or reduced over the festive season, your support will ensure we can provide emergency aid to people living in poverty, struggling with rising food and energy costs, and facing challenges just to heat their homes, feed their children, and stay digitally connected to essential contacts like GPs, lawyers, and the Home Office.

We will be actively supporting almost 500 families and individuals from 43 countries, including Syria, Palestine, Afghanistan, Iran and Yemen. We will be assisting families with children, older people, the sick, new mothers, and unaccompanied young people from 43 countries of origin. We are also distributing crisis support in Aberdeen, Perth, Erskine, Greenock, Paisley, Dundee and Edinburgh where people seeking asylum have been forcibly dispersed.

Your donation will provide essential support to impoverished and homeless or insecurely housed refugee and asylum-seeking families, individuals, and children, many of whom are surviving on as little as £1.20 per day. This includes food, warm clothing, bus travel, energy vouchers, and phone data. Every penny we raise goes directly to the families we support, with nothing deducted for administration costs.

Any amount you can donate will be most gratefully received, and contribute to our collective impact, helping us deliver life-saving support where it is most needed. We appreciate monthly donations from £10 a month to sustain our direct emergency support throughout the year. Sadaqa donations are very much appreciated. Please consider sharing this appeal with colleagues, friends and family as well. See below for how to donate.

Thank you for standing with us to bring warmth, security, and hope to those who need it most. Finally, here is our latest annual impact report which demonstrates the impact of our humanitarian work.

With best wishes and kind regards,

Robina Qureshi

Some of the people who will benefit from this appeal:

"24 year old Iman* is from Syria and has been surviving with her two disabled children aged 5 and 6 in a Home Office guesthouse for over a year. She receives just £25 a week (S95) for her and her children, which she uses to feed her young children as the food in the hotel is unsuitable for their diet. £4 of this is spent on bus fares going to college twice a week to learn English. She is forbidden to seek work, and unable to rebuild her life in temporary accommodation. Iman was forced to leave Syria after her husband was abducted by government forces. She has not heard from him for four years. she assumes the worst, that he has been tortured and killed."

"We are a family of three—a new-born daughter (4 weeks old), my wife, and myself—currently staying at a hotel in (redacted). We are struggling because the hotel does not allow cooking, leaving us reliant on expensive, ready-made food that we cannot afford. This has affected my wife's ability to breastfeed due to lack of proper nourishment, forcing us to purchase baby formula at high prices. We urgently need financial assistance for food and relocation to a city centre, where we can access markets, hospitals, and a supportive community. Despite requesting relocation, we have received no response."

"I am a patient with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and low iron, and have been on ongoing medication since 2016. I was hospitalised in October 2024, during which I was diagnosed with pneumonia, a pancreatic lesion, a blood infection, and inflammation. Following my discharge, I was advised to wear heavy clothing at all times to keep warm, both indoors and outdoors, to prevent further health complications. I urgently need financial support to purchase appropriate winter clothing and to adjust my diet to accommodate my medical needs. Additionally, I require financial assistance and counselling therapy to manage my health and recovery"

"I am a refugee from Gaza with Leave to Remain status in the United Kingdom. I have been here for two and a half years, and my wife joined me nine months ago. However, we are living apart in different cities, which is causing significant financial and emotional strain, especially as she is pregnant with our first child. I currently live with a friend because I cannot afford a place of my own, and I have to travel two to three times a week to visit my wife at great expense. We are struggling to cover basic needs such as food and clothing, and I need help securing a place to live together. Additionally, I require financial assistance to manage my personal affairs and purchase a cycle to find work and integrate into society. While my physical health is stable, my mental health is severely impacted due to the stress of my current situation and the traumatic events in Gaza. Being separated from my wife is exacerbating my mental distress, and I am having thoughts of self-harm due to the overwhelming difficulties I am facing."

"I am an asylum seeker from Iraq, living with my wife, Amina, and our three children: M (born 2010), J (born 2012), and D (born 2014). Our family is struggling to meet our basic needs. I urgently need a new phone as my current one is in terrible condition, and we also need thick clothing for the colder weather. I have suffered several heart attacks and paralysis on the left side of my body due to the trauma of years of captivity in US occupation camps in Iraq. I am now helpless and unable to access proper support or rights because I am in the process of applying for asylum. Any assistance with essential items or support for my family would greatly improve our situation."

"I am an asylum seeker from Namibia and a single mother to my baby, Gina* (born 1 February 2024). I am a survivor of torture, and I am trying to rebuild my life while caring for my child. I urgently need help with essentials such as food, baby milk, nappies, and winter clothes for both me and my baby. I also need support to purchase a heater for our home to stay warm during the cold months and to top up my mobile phone so I can stay connected. Any assistance would be deeply appreciated as I navigate this challenging time for myself and my child"

"I am a young person from Yemen living with my father, mother, and two brothers under a Family Reunion Visa. Our family of five is currently living in a single room, which is overcrowded and unsuitable for us. Due to the lack of space, my brother Hatem and I sometimes have to stay on the street because there is simply no room for all of us. Our situation is extremely difficult and unsafe, and we urgently need assistance to find better housing for our family. Any help to improve our living conditions would be deeply appreciated. Thank you."
