This past week, we have been overwhelmed with messages of support following the death of Mercy Baguma in Glasgow. It's is the third tragedy in less than 4 months. Read a detailed timeline of Glasgow's deadly accommodation crisis here.
Mercy's death has sparked a necessary debate about the inhumanity of asylum and immigration policy in the U.K. Rightly so.
We are grateful to the First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, for supporting any and all efforts to investigate her death, including backing our call for a public inquiry into the accommodation crisis faced by asylum seekers in Glasgow during the coronavirus pandemic.
We are grateful to the Prime Minister Boris Johnson for agreeing at the request of David Linden MP at PMQs on September 9 to intervene with the Home Secretary Priti Patel to allow Eric Nnanna and Baby Adriel 's asylum situation to be resolved quickly so that they can remain in Scotland.
We are grateful to everyone who donated to Mercy's appeal. The total amount raised is over £75K. From this, we settled repatriation and funeral costs. The remainder of funds will be put into trust for Baby Adriel's future education and welfare. You can donate to Adriel's Fund here.

Had we not by chance come across this case late on Monday 24 June, Mercy's story would have simply gone under the radar, as not a single responsible agency had made a statement about her death. Her family now want answers.

Positive Action in Housing is a small independent, anti-racist homelessness and human rights charity (SC027577) dedicated to supporting women, children and men from refugee and migrant backgrounds to rebuild their lives. We believe in a society where everyone has the right to live safe and dignified lives, free from poverty, homelessness or inequality. We assist those seeking sanctuary from war and persecution to overcome crisis situations, for example, the removal of basic human rights such as refuge, shelter, the right to work or hold a bank account. We support migrants to know their rights, secure paid work and stabilise their lives. We assist established ethnic minority communities to overcome bad housing. We offer welfare advice and money skills. We provide volunteering and training. We offer advice, crisis grants, and free shelter to those at risk of destitution through Room for Refugees, a refugee hosting programme (www.roomforrefugees.com).
