A Christmas Appeal by the refugee and migrant homelessness charity Positive Action in Housing (SC027577) | | | An appeal for financial donations to provide direct humanitarian relief and protection for children, women and men in Glasgow during the Christmas and Winter period.. | | Dear friend, An opportunity for you (or your company/organisation) to donate to this Christmas Appeal in the spirit of giving. Positive Action in Housing's winter surgery is providing crisis support to 300 families and individuals who are seeking asylum or have no recourse to public funds. This includes the elderly, sick or those with additional vulnerabilities. We are distributing crisis grants, bus passes, food items, essential winter survival gear, hygiene packs, selection boxes, books and craft packs for children aged 3 to 15 years old. This support is designed to give hope and a little relief from the hardship and poverty that almost all refugees are forced to endure. Hundreds of people from refugee and asylum-seeking backgrounds continue to be accommodated in hotels for months on end with no money at all, unable to buy sanitary protection, toiletries or even snacks. Still others were placed in dirty accommodation without food, money or Wi-fi access. While others were forced to share with people with their own mental health trauma. Yet others need help to resurrect their asylum cases in order to secure the right to remain and begin to rebuild their lives. Throughout Winter, Positive Action in Housing's staff and volunteers will be working to ensure that people get specialist proactive advice, advocacy, signposting and practical support from our frontline homelessness caseworkers to enable people to resolve their legal, housing or financial crisis. We will also be working to provide safe shelter, with the essential needs of food, warmth, sanitation and cleanliness met through our community hosting programme Room for Refugees and our Emergency Relief Fund. Give a donation or we can invoice your company or organisation. All funds go directly to those in need. Email home@positiveactionh.org | | | Background to this appeal In 2019/20, Positive Action in Housing assisted 1,440 destitute refugees & asylum seekers from Syria, Eritrea, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Palestine and Yemen with advice, legal representation, shelter, and crisis funds at crucial stages in their settlement. We provided 43K nights of shelter (www.roomforrefugees.com) and distributed almost £60K from our Emergency Relief Fund – providing a genuine lifeline. We work to resolve a crisis and rebuild lives. As well as humanitarian aid, we provide a breathing space so that people can decide their options with their lawyer or caseworker. This approach has produced life-transforming outcomes for people who felt they had no hope of change. | | This Winter Appeal will help vulnerable refugees and asylum seeking families, children, pregnant women, the elderly and sick survive the harsh winter period on their journey to building positive futures as equal citizens in our community. We will focus resources on those at risk of exploitation: unaccompanied children, families, pregnant woman, the elderly and sick, and lone individuals living in poverty and people with health problems/disabilities. As well as arranging shelter, our Winter Surgery provides bus tokens, food vouchers and hygiene packs, with books and art materials for children. We will also provide crisis grants to ensure people in these vulnerable and at-risk groups do not go hungry, cold, or forced to live on the street. | | Positive Action in Housing Working together to rebuild lives Scottish Registered Charity SC027577 www.positiveactionh.org www.roomforrefugees.com | | | | |
