Winter Destitution Appeal Glasgow has the biggest asylum population in the UK. Around 1,000 asylum-seekers are affected by potential street destitution. The levels of destitution and hunger are getting worse. The numbers of families needing support have trebled. While Glasgow is the main beneficiary of this appeal, we will also be distributing emergency grants to needy families and vulnerable people across the ocuntry. On 19th and 20th December, Positive Action in Housing (Scottish Registered Charity No SC027577) is running its Annual Winter Destitution Surgery in Glasgow. The aim of the surgery is to reach those in greatest need to see them through the festive season when most services are shut. Last year, we saw almost 300 families and individuals over two days. We expect a significant increase in demand. We will be accepting referrals from homelessness and refugee organisations including the British Red Cross, the Refugee Council, Freedom from Torture and others. We will be providing crisis payments, travel tokens and food vouchers as well as selection boxes and art materials and books for children, hygiene packs and bus passes. This emergency support will be provided in the week before Christmas and throughout the winter period. You can read stories about some of the people we have helped in our annual impact report here. To provide this appeal, we need financial donations over Christmas and throughout the winter period. So please donate if you can. All money will go directly assisting those in need. The gift aid from this appeal will go towards the Destitution Service. |
