Glasgow Winter Crisis Appeal 2020

Winter Appeal 2020

A Christmas Appeal by the refugee and migrant homelessness charity Positive Action in Housing (SC027577)

An appeal for hygiene packs, PPE, working smartphones or laptops and financial donations to provide direct humanitarian relief and protection for homeless people seeking refuge in Glasgow during Lockdown in the Christmas and Winter period..

Dear friend,

An opportunity for you to support this Christmas Appeal and/or ask your organisation to give a donation in the spirit of giving.

From tomorrow, Positive Action in Housing is holding a two week winter surgery for up 300 refugee and asylum seeking families and individuals. This includes the elderly, sick or those with additional vulnerabilities. We will distribute emergency support, bus passes, food items, essential winter survival gear, sleeping bags, hygiene packs, selection boxes, books and craft packs for children aged 3 to 15 years old. This support is designed to give hope and a little relief from the hardship and poverty that almost all refugees are forced to endure.

Hundreds of people from refugee and asylum-seeking backgrounds continue to be accommodated in hotels for months on end with no money at all, unable to buy sanitary protection, toiletries or even snacks. Some people were placed in dirty accommodation without food, money or Wi-fi access. While others were forced to share with people with their own mental health trauma. Yet others need help to resurrect their asylum cases in order to secure the right to remain and begin to rebuild their lives.

Throughout Winter, Positive Action in Housing's staff and volunteers will be working to ensure that people get specialist proactive advice, advocacy, signposting and practical support from our frontline homelessness caseworkers to enable people to resolve their legal, housing or financial crisis. We will also be working to provide safe shelter, with the essential needs of food, warmth, sanitation and cleanliness met through our community hosting programme Room for Refugees and our Emergency Relief Fund.

More about the winter appeal

Background to this appeal

In 2019/20, Positive Action in Housing assisted 1,440 destitute refugees & asylum seekers from Syria, Eritrea, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Palestine and Yemen with advice, legal representation, shelter, and crisis funds at crucial stages in their settlement. We provided 43K nights of shelter (www.roomforrefugees.com) and distributed almost £60K from our Emergency Relief Fund – providing a genuine lifeline. We work to resolve a crisis and rebuild lives.

As well as humanitarian aid, we provide a breathing space so that people can decide their options with their lawyer or caseworker. This approach has produced life-transforming outcomes for people who felt they had no hope of change.

This Winter Appeal will help vulnerable refugees and asylum seeking families, children, pregnant women, the elderly and sick survive the harsh winter period on their journey to building positive futures as equal citizens in our community.

We will focus resources on those at risk of exploitation: unaccompanied children, families, pregnant woman, the elderly and sick, and lone individuals living in poverty and people with health problems/disabilities.

As well as arranging shelter, our Winter Surgery provides bus tokens, food vouchers and hygiene packs, with books and art materials for children. We will also provide crisis grants to ensure people in these vulnerable and at-risk groups do not go hungry, cold, or forced to live on the street.

Donate Today

Your donation will support those who have fled war and persecution in their own countries, risking their lives on dangerous journeys, to find sanctuary here, leaving loved ones, friends and all that they know.

Whatever you give, no matter how modest, is greatly appreciated. Regular monthly donations are especially welcome as we can plan the support we give.

Finally, please forward this email to your friends, family or coworkers, and encourage them to give generously.

Winter Appeal 2020 – Please Donate
This week sees the start of a two-week long Winter Surgery at Positive Action in Housing right up until Xmas. Things have had to be changed because of the pandemic, naturally. We will be distributing direct support to 287 families and single men and women. We have volunteer drivers and a programme of appointments set up to help everyone. The surgery will safely distribute emergency crisis support to asylum seekers and those with NRPF. The surgery will benefit 319 adults and 182 children. 22% of those who are in need are living in hotels without money. 26% of people in need  are between 22 and 30 years old. 19% are between 41 and 50 years old. 5% are aged between 17 and 21 years old. The people who are getting support  are from 42 different countries of origin, including Nigeria (23%), Iran (9%), Sierra Leone (6%), Sudan/Pakistan/Iraq (5% each). Here is some information about how you can donate to and support our winter appeal.

Humans of Glasgow Network
Our Humans of Glasgow Network has been very busy. The Network grew out of the pandemic, the Park Inn incident and the need for contactless volunteering.  It is currently made up of 250 volunteers and 350 refugees – a work in progress. And it's growing.  In the past month, Morgan and Umran, our emergency relief coordinatorshave been putting together winter care packs and distributing digital technology to enable people to learn and connect. Beds and furniture and food has been delivered. Another lovely task of the network has been giving Xmas trees for refugees , within a few days over 50 families requested a tree, and we have posted some of the photos on Instagram @positiveactionh . It has brought a lot if joy to people and one of our service users wrote about it here: https://www.paih.org/our-christmas-tree    (The sad thing is that almost every tree had no presents underneath them).

We need new refugee hosts in Glasgow and London!
We are struggling to get hosts to offer shelter in Glasgow and London, and elsewhere across Scotland and the U.K. especially because of Covid 19. In London, our referral partners to Room for Refugees are seeing really vulnerable people , young people, the elderly and sick being made destitute. Please offer a spare room or property to help a destitute refugee or asylum seeker family, individual or child resolve their crisis, just fill-in this form. More info here.

Refugee and Migrants Rights Training
Here's our timetable for live, online, open course training to March 2021. We are offering all our courses online using Zoom. For in-house training please drop a line to Iain Chisholm at iain@positiveactionh.org and he will be pleased to help you.

Annual Impact Report
Here is our latest Annual Impact Report. Our 25th AGM happened on Zoom and was a quiet affair compared to previous years. But we will properly celebrate a quarter century of Positive Action in Housing once this Lockdown is over. Take a quick glance at everything we do on the one page infographic.
