Winter Appeal 2020 – Please Donate This week sees the start of a two-week long Winter Surgery at Positive Action in Housing right up until Xmas. Things have had to be changed because of the pandemic, naturally. We will be distributing direct support to 287 families and single men and women. We have volunteer drivers and a programme of appointments set up to help everyone. The surgery will safely distribute emergency crisis support to asylum seekers and those with NRPF. The surgery will benefit 319 adults and 182 children. 22% of those who are in need are living in hotels without money. 26% of people in need are between 22 and 30 years old. 19% are between 41 and 50 years old. 5% are aged between 17 and 21 years old. The people who are getting support are from 42 different countries of origin, including Nigeria (23%), Iran (9%), Sierra Leone (6%), Sudan/Pakistan/Iraq (5% each). The Network grew out of the pandemic, the Park Inn incident and the need for contactless volunteering. It is currently made up of 250 volunteers and 350 refugees – a work in progress. And it's growing. In the past month, Morgan and Umran, our emergency relief coordinatorshave been putting together winter care packs and distributing digital technology to enable people to learn and connect. Beds and furniture and food has been delivered. Another lovely task of the network has been giving Xmas trees for refugees , within a few days over 50 families requested a tree, and we have posted some of the photos on Instagram @positiveactionh . It has brought a lot if joy to people and one of our service users wrote about it here: https://www.paih.org/our-christmas-tree (The sad thing is that almost every tree had no presents underneath them). We need new refugee hosts in Glasgow and London! We are struggling to get hosts to offer shelter in Glasgow and London, and elsewhere across Scotland and the U.K. especially because of Covid 19. In London, our referral partners to Room for Refugees are seeing really vulnerable people , young people, the elderly and sick being made destitute. Please offer a spare room or property to help a destitute refugee or asylum seeker family, individual or child resolve their crisis, just fill-in this form. More info here. Refugee and Migrants Rights Training Here's our timetable for live, online, open course training to March 2021. We are offering all our courses online using Zoom.
