Asylum contract discussed by Council

The Asylum Contract was discussed by the Executive Committee of Glasgow City Council on Wednesday.

The relevant paper is in the public domain and is available at http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/councillorsandcommittees/submissiondocuments.asp?submissionid=47176

This document sets out the up to date facts of the situation but lacks any political direction.  At the moment the contract is to terminate on Feb 2 2011 but there is no indication of any new attempt to renegotiate it.  This may be because that is not the remit of the Social Care Committee.

Please contact your councillors and try to find out what the intentions of the council are.  It would be useful to know the dates of any further meetings relevant to this situation.  Their contact details are available on the Glasgow City Council website.

    Dear Mr Salmond

I am writing to urge you to ask Glasgow City Council and UKBA to communicate effectively and renegotiate contracts to support the 1300 people who are living here in Glasgow. As it is many of us privately support families from our own income because of lack of funding and support for people who come here for safety and a new life. We all know the potential issues around Private Landlords who can be unscrupulous and uncaring. As a Scottish women, proud of my heritage and hopeful for our future, I urge you to pull out the stops in the name of this humanitarian issue.

My daughter stood for parliament this May and I was so so proud. I would like to know that you are truly with us who care and who want an equal and diverse Scotland.
    Please think of the children.

    Yours

    Gerardene Douglas-Scott

Note to PAIH - I will not be able to attend the process in person on Monday as I am conducting a funeral at that time, but please count on my support
