Positive Action in Housing Christmas Appeal
RAISING FUNDS FOR DESTITUTE REFUGEES AND ASYLUM SEEKERS DURING FREEZING WINTER AHEAD
TWO DAY WINTER SURGERY IN RUN UP TO CHRISTMAS
DONATIONS AND VOLUNTEER APPEAL
INFO FOR CASEWORKERS AT END OF THIS EMAIL.
Dear Supporter,
This is a Scotland and UK wide Appeal to individuals, organisations, housing associations and trade unions for financial donations to support those who will find themselves excluded, destitute and homeless this Winter.
Every penny donated goes directly to those in need.
Wintertime is the hardest time for the people we support throughout the year. Temperatures are freezing and the nights are getting darker. Its even tougher being far away from loved ones at a time when families traditionally getting together for Christmas.
In 2016/17, 1,205 destitute and potentially destitute families and lone men and women, including 88 children and 12 pregnant women depended on Positive Action in Housing's LifeLine Service for shelter, crisis grants for food, shelter and essential travel for legal and medical appointments. The numbers of families with very young children approaching us has increased. Our service users are from 50 different countries of origin, with Syria, Iran, Iraq, Zimbabwe, Sudan and Afghanistan ranking amongst the highest numbers. We arranged 21,977 nights of shelter and distributed a total of £42,200 in hardship grants throughout the year.
The Lifeline Service provides an emergency last resort for refugees and asylum seekers while they wait for Home Office documents or go through judicial reviews and lengthy legal appeals.
We support people until they get their documentation and can then begin to rebuild their lives, often months and years after they first arrived here.
The numbers in need are rising, and we now need your help to help us to continue to provide this service.
Winter Surgery - Glasgow
On December 20 and 21, we are running a two day Winter Surgery in Glasgow - which has the highest refugee population in Scotland, and second highest in the UK. We will provide crisis support and shelter. We will prioritise children, elderly, the sick, pregnant women, lone individuals and families, and the long term destitute.
Referrals from elsewhere in Scotland and the UK
We will be accepting online "referrals" for crisis grants from Caseworkers from other refugee and homelessness organisations around the country, including the British Red Cross, Scottish Refugee Council, Freedom from Torture, Refugee Council and others. Caseworkers wishing to make a referral should first apply for an account here.
We appreciate any donation, small or large, to help us provide lifesaving support to help refugees and their families survive and eventually rebuild their lives.
Or, send a cheque made payable to Positive Action in Housing and post to: Positive Action in Housing, 98 West George Street Glasgow G2 1PJ. (Include your full name, address, and email and tell us if we can claim gift aid).
