Dear Supporter,

Each year, Positive Action in Housing (Scottish Registered Charity No SC027577) provides emergency crisis support in the form of hardship grants, food vouchers and bus tokens to around 1,055 refugees, asylum seekers and some vulnerable migrants living in, or at risk of destitution and extreme poverty.

Our annual destitution surgery is an important fixture in Positive Action in Housing's calendar.

In 2010, a mother, Father and their son from Russia fell to their deaths from the fifteenth floor of the Red Road flats. The Serykh family were refused asylum here. Their meagre financial support and housing were withdrawn and they were told to leave the Red Road flat on 7 March, the day they killed themselves. Instead of staying on, Serge Serykh, a military man, and his family followed that instruction to the letter and killed themselves. We never want another family or individual to feel so isolated, hopeless and bereft of support that they would go to such extreme measures as to take their own life. We need your support to do that.

Sara, pictured with her little boy, is a happy, confident and giving young woman. She has a strong network of support around her. A very different person to a year ago. Sara had suffered a breakdown after feeling alone and isolated looking after her baby and sofa-surfing while she tried to claim asylum. Her child was looked after by a foster carer. When she left hospital, she was told she could not have her baby back without a place to stay. We  provided Sara a home within days through one of our amazing refugee hosts, a GP and her family and then another family. The baby was handed back that same day after the social worker did some checks. We also arranged a weekly destitution grant. Within A few months, Sara was given a home by the SW Department while she progresses her asylum claim. With a little support, we have seen people come out of the most hopeless situations. Seeing Sara happy and confident was very rewarding for the team at Positive Action in Housing.

Our staff and volunteers are here to give support, both practical and pastoral, in order to help people rebuild their lives and get out of a crisis.

On 20th and 21st December, the charity is running a two day Emergency Winter Surgery to reach those in greatest need from Syria, Eritrea, Palestine, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen and Many other countries of origin.

We are directly reaching our most vulnerable service users, unaccompanied children, families, pregnant woman, the elderly and sick, and lone individuals living in poverty and long term destitution in Glasgow which has the highest refugee population in Scotland, second only to London.

We are also taking "online referrals" of cases of extreme hardship from our Room for Refugees network of over 320 organisations across Scotland and the UK. These include the British Red Cross, Freedom from Torture, Refugee Council and Scottish Refugee Council.

We will provide: crisis payments, food vouchers, bus tokens and hygiene packs to people fleeing war and persecution; hot soup and home made bread, gifts of books, art materials and selection boxes for children (donations of these items only are most welcome and should be wrapped with contents clearly stated on top).

For caseworkers wishing to refer: this is not a drop in, And we won't see anyone who is not referred. so make a referral first,  more info here.
