To all members, friends and supporters Dear Friends/Supporters, Donate to our Afghan Crisis Appeal via CAF , PayPal or visit our donate page for other ways to give. On Wednesday 18 August, the Prime Minister announced that the UK would resettle a further 20,000 people fleeing the Taliban – 5,000 in the first year – as part of a new Afghanistan Citizens' Resettlement Scheme. We are still waiting for the Home Office to provide more information about how the new scheme will work, when it will begin, and who will be eligible to apply. Positive Action in Housing is dealing with an increased number of requests for assistance from Afghans newly arrived to Glasgow and elsewhere in Scotland and the rest of the UK. We are also getting emails from vulnerable civilians inside Afghanistan seeking advice about safe routes out. We are also receiving requests for help from those already here who are concerned about loved ones abroad. In the medium term, we anticipate that newly arrived Afghans may be left in hotels longer than the quarantine period. longer term, the impact of the new nationality and borders bill on those Afghans and others trying to reach the UK through irregular means, means we expect the demand for destitution support to escalate in the coming weeks and months as the humanitarian crisis unfolds. We will make the best use of the resources we have built up over the years to provide support in these crises situations, and we seek your help. Our Emergency Relief Fund is expected to be used up to assist with crisis grants for emergency needs. We are already distributing around £5K per month and assist around 1,000 refugees or asylum seekers per year. If you and/or your organisation can give a regular donation of any amount you can afford, please donate via CAF . Alternatively, donate via PayPal or visit our donate page for other ways to give. Our bilingual caseworkers are currently dealing with requests for assistance. We are grateful to the huge number of people who have kindly offered practical support and offered to host children, families and individuals in their homes. Anyone who wishes to join the pool of potential hosts at Room for Refugees can register at www.roomforrefugees.com. If your with a non profit organisation or law firm and wish to be listed in our refugee and migrants network then please complete the online form here: https://directory.paih.org/get-listed/ . This will help us immensely to signpost individuals and also identify organisations willing to help Afghans in need of support in Glasgow and elsewhere in Scotland (and the rest of the UK) as demand dictates. We are in the early stages of planning and will be sharing regular updates on our website and social media platforms. Thank you again for all your support, and feel free to drop us a line with your feedback or suggestions. best wishes and kind regards, Robina Qureshi Director Positive Action in Housing |
