Positive Action in Housing is raising funds to help destitute and insecurely housed refugee and asylum seeking families to rebuild their lives and resettle permanently in Scotland or the UK. The refugee crisis hasn't gone away. It's got worse. Thousands of men, women and children drown each year trying to reach Europe. Thousands more are trapped in overcrowded conditions in Greece. Volunteers are being criminalised for helping. Glasgow, where Positive Action in Housing is based, has the biggest asylum population in the UK. A new ten year plan by the Home Office will disperse thousands more to the city. Earlier this year, Positive Action in Housing led a successful campaign to stop SERCO from changing the locks on people's homes and mass evicting 330 refugees and asylum seekers and their families without following due process. Registered social landlords and private landlords joined us in the campaign. SERCO was forced into a humiliating u turn. Next month will see the Court of Session debate the legality of evicting refugees and asylum seekers without a court order and determine whether lock changes will be normalised. Equality and human rights has never been more important. Enabling destitute and insecurely housed refugees and asylum seekers to resolve a legal or housing crisis is central to rebuilding lives. |
