Training from Positive Action in Housing 2019

Hi there,

I hope you're well and keeping warm and dry now the weather has turned.

Still wondering what to ask Santa for this Christmas? Time to turn your thoughts to New Year resolutions? We have the solution to both seasonal dilemmas: help us raise funds to carry on our humanitarian work and get the information you and your colleagues need to make your services more responsive and accessible, by booking a place on one of our half day equality and migrants' rights training courses between January and March 2019!

If you don't want to get any more of these emails, you can unsubscribe by clicking the link at the foot of the page.

The uncertainty of Brexit, the roll out of Universal Credit and the Home Office's hostile environment policies are making life more precarious for migrants in Scotland and access to benefits is difficult at the best of times. For migrants with disabilities access to the right benefits is vital for health and well-being – for housing providers ensuring their tenants have access to all the money available can make the difference between a tenancy thriving or failing. Our half day course on Disability Rights for Migrants covers presence and residence tests and strategies for supporting tenants and service users through the application process.

While the Immigration Rules are more complex than ever, housing providers accommodate people with a very wide range of immigration statuses, from EEA nationals, to refugees with limited leave to remain, to people with work visas. Some tenants have full access to welfare benefits, some have limited access and some have "No Public Funds" stamps, but it is not always obvious which and circumstances change. Maintaining tenancies in these circumstances can be difficult for everyone involved. Our half-day No Recourse To Public Funds workshop will help frontline workers identify a tenant's current status, clarify what this means in terms of access to public funds and plan effective support where difficulties arise.

We're also running these old favourite half-day courses, freshly updated with the latest regulations:

The Rights and Entitlements of European Economic Area Nationals have been more and more severely restricted over recent years. The uncertainty and threats of Brexit and imminent roll-out of full service Universal Credit mean it is more important than ever for housing providers, local authorities and 3rd sector organisations to be able to offer EEA tenants and service users excellent advice at the earliest stage. Our course will help you prevent unnecessary poverty, rent arrears and evictions.

Now that all Scottish Local Authorities are hosting refugees, service providers throughout Scotland should have an awareness of issues affecting refugees and asylum seekers. Our Rights of Refugee and Asylum Seekers course explores how the asylum system works from the perspective of a claimant and the process involved in making a claim for asylum. The course also examines the barriers faced by both refugees and asylum seekers building a new life in Scotland and their respective entitlement to services.

All these courses cost £90 per participant, including refreshments, and there's a 50% discount for Positive Action in Housing members. If you've seen enough and want to book, you can book online here for courses in January to March 2019. If you want some more information about courses, dates and venues, you can click on one of the links to our training webpage, or please don't hesitate to call or send me an email.

We also offer a range of Equality and Diversity courses we can run in-house for organisations trying to develop more accessible and responsive services and working environments:
